Taking charge on and off the field

16 February, 2018

While there might not be as much charging in an office as on the rugby field, NRL WA General Manager John Sackson says there are parallels between business and sport.

Sackson will be joined by NRL legends Melbourne Storm coach Craig Bellamy, Storm Captain Cameron Smith and NRL CEO Todd Greenberg as guest speakers at the Teamwork beyond the field CCI-NRL breakfast on March 9.

The event will also feature a panel of greats including Rabbitohs CEO Blake Solly, Bulldogs CEO Andrew Hill, Melbourne Storm CEO Dave Donaghy and Warriors CEO Cameron George.

Sackson says the event will cover the lessons that can be applied from rugby to business and vice versa.

“The parallels between business and sport are strong, a lot of the fundamentals are the same,” he says.

“You’ve got the leadership aspects of running a club. The relationship between the front office and the playing group and the coaching staff all those sorts of things.

“It’s people management, it’s the same in any organisation.

“The coaches and captains are people managers and their task is to get the best out of their people through strong leadership qualities

“They also have to build a good culture. When you talk to an incredibly successful coach like Craig Bellamy the first thing you ask is how has he built such a successful culture at the Storm.”

Financially there are also a lot of comparisons, says Sackson.

“The art of contracting players and staying within salary caps are financial management aspects that business also has to consider,” he says.

“There are also things like sponsorship and business-to-business relationships to consider.”
