An employee comes into your office in tears, saying she felt bullied by her manager but she does not want to make an official complaint. Do you have any obligation to do anything further?

Employers have a duty of care to provide a safe working environment for all employees and this may constitute a hazard which is no different to any other unsafe workplace practice, so you need to consider this when deciding on your next steps.

Now that you are aware this employee feels as though she has been bullied, you need to consider whether or not there is any risk to her safety or mental health.

If so, you should follow any company policies and procedures you have to deal with bullying in the workplace.

These may include a mediation between the parties or a workplace investigation to establish whether or not the conduct constitutes bullying.
