ASIC Chairman winds down

04 August, 2017

Outgoing Australian Securities and Investments Commission Chairman Greg Medcraft is one of Australia’s most respected leaders in the finance sector and is into his last few months in the role.

Hear from Medcraft as part of the CCI Lighthouse Leadership series on August 31 at the Hyatt Regency, in one of his last public addresses before leaving the post in November.

Medcraft has overseen ASIC’s plans for a user pays funding model, which passed through parliament on June 15 and came into effect on July 1.

The model will see ASIC recover about $240 million from the industry it regulates next year, with banks to be hit with the majority of costs.

The first invoices recovering costs for ASIC's regulatory services for the 2017–18 financial year will be issued in January 2019.

Prior to joining ASIC as Commissioner in 2009, Medcraft had a distinguished career in investment banking, spending nearly 30 years at Societe Generale in Australia, Asia, Europe and the Americas.

Medcraft has been CEO and Executive Director at the Australian Securitisation Forum and co-founded the American Securitisation Forum.

He was Chair of the International Organisation of Securities Commissions board from March 2013 to May 2016 and is a director of the Salzburg Global Seminar – the first Australian to be appointed to the board.

Medcraft is also a member of the IMF High-Level Advisory Group of the Interdepartmental Working Group on Finance and Technology and was recently appointed to the Board of Directors United States Studies Centre at the University of Sydney.
