Esperance to Goldfields pipeline on government agenda (17 Sept 04)
The State Government has requested the Economic Regulation Authority (ERA) undertake a review of the cost of supplying bulk drinking water to the Goldfields.
The proposal initiated by water treatment company United Utilities, estimated at $300 million, is to build a desalination plant in Esperance and pipe as much as 60 mega litres per day of fresh water across 440 km to the Goldfields.
The concept was rendered impractical in January. However, United Utilities has presented extra information to the State Government and has established substantial commitments from a number of Goldfields companies.
The project, if it is given the go-ahead, will contribute to the expansion of economic development in the Goldfields, provide a cost-effective alternative water supply to Kalgoorlie and help to free-up water for other users served by the Integrated Water Supply Scheme. United Utilities will work closely with the ERA and State Water Task Force to confirm a price at which bulk drinking water from the project could be purchased by the Water Corporation for sale and distribution to customers in the Goldfields.
