Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find a prospective apprentice or trainee?

The employer may select any recruitment method they prefer, for example advertising, employment agencies and word of mouth. The individual does not have to be registered as unemployed and, subject to certain restrictions, can be someone you already employ.

Do I have to pay superannuation and workers compensation?

Yes.
| TOP
Where does the training take place? Can I do it all on-the-job?

The training is designed to be flexible. Some traineeships can be completely on-the-job, others are a combination of on and off-the-job.

Apprenticeships require a combination of on and off-the-job work.

Employer Incentives?

Employers are eligible to claim incentive payments of at least $1250 up to $4400. Additional incentives are available for other special circumstances.

Employers can also access industry-designed training at no cost to themselves and can choose to pay a training wage for the duration of the traineeship or apprenticeship. The actual pay rate depends upon the award under which the trainee/apprentice is employed and the training provisions within that award.

Employers are exempt from payroll tax in respect to all apprentices and trainees.

Trainee / Apprentice Incentives?

Traineeships and apprenticeships are more than just jobs - they provide a great start to a rewarding career.

They combine practical work experience with structured training to provide a nationally recognised qualification.

These qualifications give trainees a competitive edge in the job market by demonstrating the necessary skills, training and experience required for a particular occupation. They also provide a basis for further education and training.

Traineeships and apprenticeships widen career options by helping participants to:

  • become competent in a particular job and a range of skills
  • gain experience in interesting and varied work
  • understand new workplace technologies
  • improve communication skills
  • solve problems
  • work towards further education and training

Traineeships and apprenticehsips are available in a range of occupations and industries. Trainees and apprentices may receive a training wage, which is subject to the relevant award. Other allowances may apply in addition to the training wage if the apprentice or trainee is required to move away from home.

| TOP
Is a traineeship a fixed term? Can a traineeship be terminated? Can the trainee leave?

The nominal duration for most traineeships is one year; however, it is subject to normal award provisions.
| TOP
Does the trainee/apprentice receive a certificate?

Yes. On successful completion, trainees/apprentices receive a nationally recognised qualification.
| TOP
Do they have to work full-time?

Apprentices must be full-time but traineeships are available for part-time employees working a minimum of 20 hours per week.
