CCI welcomes Oakajee port announcement

CCI hopes the selection of a preferred developer for a new deep water port at Oakajee north of Geraldton will provide the stimulus for further economic growth and prosperity in the State's Mid West region.

The state's peak business organisation, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Western Australia, welcomes the achievement of this significant milestone and commitment to construct vital nation building infrastructure in the Region.

However, there remains much work to be done if the deep water port is to be completed and operational by 2012 - leaving just over three years for the project to meet all the necessary planning and environmental approvals.

The WA business community is concerned that the Government has yet to select a preferred developer for the supporting rail infrastructure. Given that the project will require rigorous environmental assessment, it is essential the Government act quickly to complete the tender process.

CCI once again urges the State Government to streamline its unwieldy planning approvals system to expedite the development of not only this vital infrastructure project, but others across the state.

The potential for Oakajee's development as a deep water port has previously been identified by CCI as a key infrastructure requirement for Western Australia.

The construction of a new facility 20 kilometres north of the city has the potential to unlock the Region's economic potential, especially in the resources sector, and open the local economy to new business opportunities.

Recent research by CCI revealed that the Mid West is an important hub of regional business activity, and home to more than five thousand businesses. The local economy has grown strongly in recent years, recording growth in excess of 11 per cent over the past five years.

CCI believes the project should cement the Mid West as a major driver of the state's economy.

By doing so it would allow WA to strengthen its role as the economic powerhouse of the nation.
