CCI represents the business view at a state and national level on issues of importance to business.  CCI's OSH and Worker's Compensation Committee develops policy submissions on significant issues regarding OSH and Workers' Compensationboth on issues at a state and national level. It comprises representatives from CCI's overall membership base and ensures that CCI plays a major role in influencing government debate.

Having gathered business' views from the Committee and from the business community at large, CCI has representatives on a range of state and federal OSH advisory committees and councils, ensuring the voice of business big and small is heard and considered across all major OSH issues and proposals.

Some current issues are listed below. If you'd like to comment on any of these issues,  please contact the writer of each posting below.

Obesity Policy

Prevalence of overweight and obesity has risen steadily in Australian adults and children for two decades or more. Recent data suggest that more than half the adult population and around one in four Australian children are now overweight or obese. Obesity has a highly complex aetiology and enormous health, social and economic consequences. There is no simple solution – a sustained, coordinated and highly focused national effort will be required to reverse the current trend.

CCI advocates policy development that is underpinned by sound evidence and a government industry partnership to transition the food market toward one that is characterised by greater availability and greater acceptance of healthy food choices. Comprehensive education and health promotion strategies that allow individuals to make informed choices and encourage them to accept responsibility for lifestyle behaviours, rather than regulatory and/or economic measures that seek to punish poor lifestyle choices, should form the cornerstone of an obesity policy framework.

Review of the 2005 Workers' Compensation changes (Jan 07)

CCI has provided a submission to the review of the implementation of the 2005 changes to the Workers' Compensation and Injury Management Act 1981. The submission raises a number of concerns in respect to the changes and makes the strong point that it is too early for a comprehensive review as some of the changes have just recently been activated.

Security: the threat to business continuity - A Discussion Paper

This paper is the first in a seven-part Business Leadership Series by CCI and outlines many of the government initiatives to counter major criminal and terrorist activities and to contain and control a pandemic.

Overall the paper identifies the large and continually increasing government infrastructure to identify, assess and prevent or control security threats to Australia. Most importantly, it encourages all businesses to address potential security threats by establishing continuity plans that have regard for short and long-term physical, operational and financial viability following an adverse advent.
