A guide for retailers to prevent the misuse of volatile substances

Retailers can provide a great service to their communities by limiting the opportunities for volatile substances to be obtained for the purposes of intoxication. As sellers of volatile substances, you and your staff can play a role in preventing solvent misuse.

The Minister for Health has accepted the recommendation of the Western Australian Taskforce on Butane Misuse (2006) to strengthen the Code of Conduct to restrict the supply of volatile substances and stop the sale of butane to minors. In doing so, he indicated that this would be reviewed if not successful, and legislation will be introduced to ban the sale of butane to minors.

The Code of Conduct has been developed by the Drug and Alcohol Office in partnership with the Retail Trader’s Association of WA and the Hardware Association of WA.
