CCI's Manufacturing, Engineering and Resource Forum provides advice to CCI's General Council on matters of specific relevance to members in the associated sectors in WA. It represents members' views to ensure that key economic, environmental and legislative issues are addressed and promote rather than hinder the growth and viability of the State's energy and resource sectors. Some of the current issues under consideration are listed below.

CCI's Food Committee generates and influences debate on issues at a national and sate level including food labelling requirements, standards and hygiene practices. It also establishes advisory groups to investigate and report on specific issues, works with government and industry associations and ensures that food and beverage manufacturers, along with processors and suppliers in both the retail and wholesale sectors are informed of relevant legislation and workplace safety requirements. Some of the current issues under consideration are listed below.

Country-of-origin labelling (16 Sep 2005)

A review of Country of Origin (CoOL) provisions in Australia and New Zealand was commenced by FSANZ in 2001 for the purpose of harmonizing requirements in both countries for the new joint Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code.

Inquiry into the Production and Marketing of Foodstuffs (16 Sep 2005)

When labelling changes last occurred under the Food Standards Code in December 2003 surveys showed that the cost of compliance by the packaged food industry was in the vicinity of $500 million across Australia.

Inquiry into the Production and Marketing of Foodstuffs (17 Aug 2005)

CCI’s Food Industry Committee is concerned to ensure that debate on the current Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) discussion paper on the development of a food standard for country of origin labelling is not driven to the detriment of the local food manufacturing industry.

Review of FSANZ assessment and approval processes and treatment of confidential commercial information (17 Aug 2005)

CCI understands this Review follows agreement by the Food Regulation Standing Committee (FRSC) to establish a working group to advise on expediting the FSANZ assessment and approval processes and protecting commercial confidential information and public health in accordance with the Food Standards Australia New Zealand Act 1991 (the Act).

Food Safety and Information Office (March 2005)

The WA ICT Industry Strategy - “Enabling Future Prosperity” (September 2004)

Development of Western Australia’s ICT industry is congruous with CCI’s IT, E-Commerce and Business Services Committee’s (the Committee) charter to actively pursue opportunities that will advance the industry for the benefit of all ICT goods and services providers. Review of the Consultative Mechanism (September 2004)

CCI is concerned to ensure that a mechanism for stakeholder consultation in the development of food regulatory policy is implemented as contemplated in the COAG agreement of November 2000, which in turn addressed the recommendations of Dr Bill Blair’s Food Regulation Review Report released in 1998.
