Injury Management

The amendments of November 2005 made significant alterations to injury management for employers.

An employer is required to have an Injury Management Policy (click here for a template).

The Policy must comply with the requirements of the Injury Management Code of Practice.  WorkCover WA has released a guidance notes to the Code, which you can find here.

An employer must also draft a Injury Management plan that outlines the goal and duties of the return to work plan.  A template is located here for assistance.

Cycle of an injury

When an injury occurs it has a recognisable life cycle.

In the acute phase of the injury the goal is to diagnose the injury and relieve symptoms.  In the recovery phase treatment is focused on relieving symptoms and recovery.  As the injury reaches the chronic stage it is possible that some symptoms will require time to resolve or the symptoms may not fully resolve.

It is generally considered that if an injury does not make significant improvements within 3 months of the injury it is likely that some residual symptoms will remain, attention should be focused on the return to work process and yellow flags of psycho-social behaviour may be noted.
