CCI recently established a Social Policy unit to assist and support business involvement in strengthening the Western Australian community. The key focus of the initiative is to ensure a greater social policy perspective within CCI general policy and to work with members on appropriate social policy initiatives in the areas of health, occupational safety and health and workers' compensation.
Health Policy
CCI provides policy advice on issues in health, community services, disability services and aged care. Specific activities include drafting submissions in response to relevant government discussion and consultation papers, contributing to public debate on relevant issues and working with member organisations.
Key focus areas for discussion papers include disability employment, health , obesity and the health workforce.
CCI represents the private and not-for-profit sectors on various government advisory groups.
Through the Health and Community Services Forum and its associated Committees, issues of concern to members in the Health and Community Services sector can be identified and policy and lobbying strategies developed. Practical support is provided to member initiatives in policy, training and research utilising strong links with government.
A Transition to Registered Nursing Program operates under the Policy Forum, facilitating the transition of school students into university through some practical workplace experience.
Available in hard copy, the Community Care newsletter provides members with regular news and information on important developments within the health and community services sector including national and State Government initiatives, research reports and relevant professional and community events. There are also regular features in Business Pulse.

OSH Policy
Occupational safety and health remains a major component of the unit’s work with particular emphasis on national OHS harmonisation. CCI is privileged to represent the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry on the Safe Work Australia (SWA) Council. The SWA Council is pursuing the Council of Australian Governments’ (COAG) agenda in developing the nationally harmonised legislative package to be adopted by all jurisdictions in 2011.
CCI is also a member of the State Commission for Occupational Safety and Health.
Workers' Compensation Policy
CCI represents employers on the WorkCover Legislative Review Stakeholders’ Reference Group currently reviewing the Workers’ Compensation and Injury Management Act 1981.
CCI’s work in occupational safety and health and workers’ compensation is supported and guided by members of the Occupational Safety and Health/Workers’ Compensation Committee. The committee meets quarterly and provides considerable input into the development of national and state legislation including standards and codes of practice.
