Responding to recent intense media coverage of the issue, CCI contributed an Opinion piece, published in the West Australian Newspaper on 22 January 2007, questioning the current pre-occupation of the debate with diet in the face of sound evidence that other behavioural factors play an equally important role.

This submission commented on the Department of Health’s Discussion Paper released in June 2005 seeking public comment on a new health act to replace the Health Act 1911.  The proposal is to replace the nuisance and sanitation provisions contained in the current Act with a risk management approach following the lead of other states.

This submission supported many of the draft proposals put forward in the Position Paper including the suggested move towards a national registration system, changes to the range of services covered under the MBS and called for delegation of tasks and job redesign.

This preliminary submission called for CCI recommended the creation of a visible high-level strategic workforce planning council with a broad mandate to assess trends for resource allocation and demographics and review funding allocation models.  CCI advocated leadership by the Commonwealth to sponsor and promote a new culture of collaboration between all contributors to health service delivery, argued for new education methods with a focus on industry needs and a greater willingness to flexible and adaptable structures such as the combination of education with paid work.
