Apprenticeships and Traineeships
An apprenticeship is an employment-based training program during which an apprentice is contracted to an employer to learn the knowledge and skills of a particular trade.
Apprenticeships combine practical workplace experience with structured training which is usually delivered off the job. Under current arrangements, an apprenticeship typically last three or four years.
A traineeship is an employment based training program which provides an opportunity for young people entering the workforce, or others looking to change the direction of their career, with the basic knowledge and skills required in a particular industry or occupational area.
Traineeships combine practical workplace experience with structured training which may be delivered on or off the job. Under current arrangements, a traineeship typically lasts one year but can be up to 3 years.
For both apprenticeships and traineeships, employers are obliged to:
- provide a suitable workplace environment for the apprentice or trainee to learn the skills of the trade or occupation;
- allow time off work, with pay, to attend off-the-job training (not applicable to some traineeships), and;
- pay the appropriate wage rates for apprentices and/or trainees.
Employers choosing to access traineeships and apprenticeship programs may be eligible to access federal government incentive payments of up to $4000. They may also qualify for other financial benefits including payroll tax exemption for trainees and apprentices plus workers compensations rebates.
