The chief executives of the Nation's and the State's largest and most influential business organisations are taking part in a four day tour of the Pilbara region in recognition of its importance to Australia's economic growth and prosperity.
The chief executive of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Western Australia, James Pearson, will be joined on the tour by his counterpart from the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), Peter Anderson.
The business leaders will visit Karratha, Paraburdoo, Tom Price, Dampier and surrounding areas to learn more about the issues and challenges which face the region, its businesses, and communities.
CCI recognises that business and industry across the North West is driving growth and investment, and generating wealth for all Australians.
A recently released CCI study awarded the Pilbara the title of the State’s fastest growing regional economy. The Profile of WA Business revealed that the Pilbara region has grown at a remarkable rate in recent years as a result of the China led resources boom.
In the last two years alone, the Pilbara has grown by a phenomenal 80 per cent, making it easily the fastest growing region in the State, and probably the fastest growing economy in the world. The region’s economy is worth nearly $7 billion.
More than 2,000 businesses are located in the region, with mining the biggest revenue earner, accounting for two thirds of the state's mineral and energy production in 2005-06.
Unfortunately, many regional communities have been unable to keep pace with the level of investment, partially because of its sheer size, but also because of critical failures in state and local government service delivery and coordination.
Housing shortages, a lack of essential and community services, and inadequate investment in local communities is preventing the Region, its businesses, and people from realising their full potential.
With predictions local business will continue grow, and the region an integral part of the State's economic development, the need to create liveable and sustainable communities, that encourage business investment and growth, has never been greater.
